Crisis | Typhoons in Taiwan
Disaster Management in the Republic of China
A typhoon made landfall on the South-Eastern edge of Taiwan, after narrowly missing the Philippines earlier in the week. Typhoon Leo underwent an unseen and undetected intensification in the Philippines Sea. This led to existing typhoon preparation efforts being insufficient for the storm that inevitably struck and citizens to be unprepared for the damage Typhoon Leo would cause. Now, a couple days after landfall, infrastructure is damaged, telecommunications are out and Taiwanese civilians are stranded in the notoriously perilous mountain region of the country. Worry and fear racks the country but at the same time support flows into the impacted regions as the Taiwanese populace looks to recover following this unexpectedly powerful natural disaster. It is now your role as members of the Taiwanese government and International aid organizations to help those civilians who are impacted, rebuild the damage caused and ensure Taiwan is better prepared against future disasters.
