Our Conference Values

AN EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE

The Washington International Relations Conferences creates an environment for delegates to improve their Model UN skills, whether this is their first experience or one of many. All are welcome at WIRC, and staffers seek to include delegates of different levels by meeting students where they are, providing personalized feedback, and helping them improve to the best of their ability. This is accomplished in a single-day conference at an affordable price of $10 per delegate. This ensures that students of all backgrounds can attend, regardless of if they are learning about Model UN for the first time or tuning their existing expertise. WIRC is run by American University students excited about MUN who seek to share their enthusiasm and dedication with delegates. As our conference is staffed by the #1 ranked Model United Nations collegiate team in North America, WIRC ensures delegates will have a high-quality educational experience. Passionate about MUN, we want to ignite in delegates a similar interest in international relations, the diplomatic process, and intergovernmental cooperation. As one of WIRC’s values, this is at the heart of everything we do. We hope WIRC will encourage delegates to take their knowledge gained here and participate in subsequent conferences as well.

BELONGINGNESS AS A POLICY

As a stepping stone in a delegate’s Model UN journey, WIRC welcomes all. Crucial in ensuring this openness also translates into the conference itself, we stress the importance of creating a sense of belonging for all attendees and staff. We seek to celebrate the differences present among individuals, as this can help students gain a greater sense of perspective, inspiring respect for different cultures across the world. Within the conference, all delegates must support each other throughout their endeavors and treat each other fairly. In order to promote an environment of inclusion, WIRC does not tolerate discrimination based on race, color, sex, gender identity, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and/or ability. Abuse, harassment, and mistreatment of any kind are strictly prohibited and will be dealt with accordingly. We want any students with a curiosity for Model UN to leave our conference with a greater sense of self and the world, and treating each other equally during the conference is the first step to achieving this.

DEMILITARIZATION

WIRC is proud to be a demilitarized conference, encouraging international diplomacy while reflecting our value of supporting delegate education and personal growth. This does not mean students are asked to ignore the realities of global violence; rather, demilitarization focuses on preventing the use of excess force during committee. Delegates are encouraged to focus on pursuing peace-centered policies - such as de-escalating conflict, supporting historically marginalized identities, and expanding the rights of communities - rather than pursuing violent action.
