Water Security and Transboundary Water Management in the Indo-Pacific

The future of the Indo-Pacific can be found in its water, and that water is turbulent! Asia’s geopolitical landscape is increasingly being shaped by resource insecurity and environmental pressures. The Mekong and Chao Phraya deltas are rapidly sinking, while upstream dam construction has disrupted natural river systems and heightened vulnerabilities downstream. As water scarcity and climate change intensify, cross-border water resources are becoming sources of both cooperation and competition. Traditional security frameworks centered on military power alone are no longer enough to address these emerging challenges.

The goal of this session of the UN Security Council will be to work together on thorough and timely solutions to seamlessly solve territorial disputes in the waters of the Indo-Pacific. The committee will engage in dialogue centered around resolving any confrontational acts nations have carried out and establishing collaborative frameworks for the future of the Indo-Pacific. The time to act is now. Will the UNSC sink or swim?
